Power of Words

I wonder when we as women will get it right? There is no need to compete with one another, nor put one another down. Why do our words towards one another have to bite? What do we gain from putting our sisters down?

“We’re connected, as women. It’s like a spiderweb. If one part of that web vibrates, if there’s trouble, we all know it, but most of the time we’re just too scared, or selfish, or insecure to help. But if we don’t help each other, who will?” Sarah Addison Allen

Who bit you? I remember hearing the question asked several years ago. In a descriptive lesson of how our hurts manifest throughout our lives, there often begs the begs the question of: Who bit you?

While her words, I could not decipher, were meant to be a compliment or attack, left me feeling a tad unsure of myself – okay, if I’m honest, even insecure for a moment. While I wanted to further investigate her intentions and motives, with my children standing beside me, I dropped it all completely. What rang in the back of my mind, watching her leave, was the phrase, Who bit you?

We have to be careful with our words. Mindful of how we spill them. Words have so much power. I fear not everyone understands just how much power lay in the words they speak. I’m not one to take to heart just what anyone says to me or about me… However, there are some things that will get under my skin, especially when spoken in front of my children.

My wish today and everyday, is that we women will get it right. Why put one another down because of our own insecurities? Can’t we learn to just build one another up? When we learn to love ourselves, and see ourselves as God does… We were all made beautifully, in His image. There is no room for comparison, nor putting one another down.
