May You Not Know

I like you.

Thus, I keep this secret

And ask heaven for permission,

May you not know

For one more day,

May you not know

For 100 years more.

Not my words, I don’t know that I could be so eloquent…

Here we are in 5th, 7th and 9th grades… Someone has a secret crush. I went for a walk yesterday and contemplated what it means to like someone secretly.. I concluded that it takes a lot of time, effort, and emotions – among others things – to keep such feelings hidden.

I have been there before, yet still I wonder what’s the point of a secret crush?

So, carefully, I asked the question – rather, it was a careful combination of a thought and a question. I mean, when we hide how we truly feel about someone – or something, for that matter, aren’t we just lying to ourselves and others? And at the end of the day, aren’t we left with the question of what if? Regret?

What happens when we keep our feelings hidden, or inside? It becomes a pattern. We miss out. We are so used to covering up how we truly feel that we eventually come to a place where we don’t even know how we feel.

So what’s the point?! I mean is this a way to live? Not being true to oneself? Hiding out of fear? That’s the root of it all, right? Fear? Afraid of being rejected. Afraid of not measuring up. Afraid of not being good enough. Afraid of failing… Maybe that’s just me?

But, you’ll never know if you never try.

So, I encouraged them, stop hiding! Be true to you!
