“For if ye love them which love you, what thank have ye? for sinners also love those that love them. But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil. Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.” Luke 6:32, 35-36 KJV
To be true followers of Christ, we must love without condition. Not just our families and friends, but also our enemies. This love sets us apart.
I remember, in my younger years, how impossible it seemed to love those who had hurt me. But, isn’t this God’s way? As I’ve become older and able to understand the true love of God, it has become easier to love my enemies and those who have hurt me.
Christ’s love for us is not conditional. Neither should our love for others. When I learned that it’s not about me, that changed everything. It takes God’s love in us to love our enemies. It’s His love in us that sets us apart.
If we love only those who love us and are kind to us, we are no different from the rest of the world. Oh, but to love everyone, especially those that hurt us, that’s love.
Loving my enemies has been a weight lifted off my shoulders. It has been one of the most freeing experiences of my life.
Love isn’t about what we get in return, rather, it’s what we do, who we are, it’s a way of life.
I will continue to strive today and every day to love, to be set apart.
