Birthright

And Jacob said, Sell me this day thy birthright. And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do to me? And Jacob said, Swear to me this day; and he sware unto him: and he sold his birthright unto Jacob. Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles; and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way: thus Esau despised his birthright. Genesis 25:31‭-‬34 KJV

I was speaking with my kids tonight on this topic above… As we are wrapped up in the time of year where we celebrate our Savior’s birth, my mind leads me to the purpose of it all: He came to give us our birthright.

Jesus came so that we could live through His death, burial, and resurrection.

I’ve seen too many, like Esau, sell their birthright for momentary satisfaction. For Esau, it was a bowl a soup. I don’t know if that soup filled his belly? What I gather from the passage above is instant regret as he despised his birthright. How many of us end up like this? Exchanging our birthright for the momentary pleasures of sin. The momentary pleasure of this world.

I’m thankful that there is forgiveness. I’m thankful for grace and mercy. Because, once upon a time, I was Esau. I exchanged my birthright for a life of sin. I’m so glad that I found myself an altar, repentance.. I believe I’ve written before; I am the prodigal…
