Walking Backwards

Stubbornunreasonably or perversely unyielding.

In other words, doing what you want to do even if it doesn’t make any sense. It’s dangerous to be stubborn.

“But this thing commanded I them, saying, Obey my voice, and I will be your God, and ye shall be my people: and walk ye in all the ways that I have commanded you, that it may be well unto you. But they hearkened not, nor inclined their ear, but walked in the counsels and in the imagination of their evil heart, and went backward, and not forward.” Jeremiah‬ ‭7:23-24‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Have you ever found yourself walking backward, not forward? What was going on in your life in at that time?

I’ve been there. I’ll admit, in the multiple moments of walking backwards, it was when I had made the decision to take my life into my own hands. It was in moments of not listening to God, whether delayed obedience or outright disobedience. Both, really, were my own stubbornness at the core.

The verse above pricks my heart. 1 Samuel 15:23 tells us that …stubbornness is as idolatry… Really, what that is saying is, in our perverse, unreasonable, unyielding, or unwillingness to surrender and/or obey God, walk in His ways which He has commanded us, and obey His voice, we have chosen, rather to listen to the sinful nature of our flesh. Rather than progress forward and press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus, we are stunted and move backward in sin, the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eye and the pride of life.

  1. Honesty will endear your audience. That’s great – we need your example. But I’m also glad for you as God is wisher and more enamored with your honesty that we ourselves could ever be.
