I used to love this song… Then, I really thought about the lyrics…

You know, sometimes in this life, I feel like we get a little confused about who we are and who He is. I think we can forget that although Jesus did come to earth to give His life for the sins of all men. We were created for Him. And, yes, while He chose to put on corruption, to reconcile us to Himself, it was all about Him.. It always has been, not about us.

This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away. 2 Timothy 3:1‭-‬2‭, ‬4‭-‬5 KJV

There are many ways to interpret the passage above. I’ve been in the church for my entire life and have heard this taught many different ways. Depending on the audience, it has been used for sexual purity teachings, to chastise rebellious teens, convict the wayward to return to Christ. All of these, reminders that we are indeed living in the last days and such behaviors ought to be avoided.

But, as I consider this verse – you know, you gain new understandings and insights the more you study the Word of God – I wonder… For one, we cannot take just one or two parts to focus on, but the entirety of the characteristics of men in the last days. I wonder if, part of the lovers of their own selves and lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God and having a form of godliness but denying the power thereof… is actually tied to our relationship with God? As I mentioned above, in the time that we are living, mentality seems to have shifted and there seems to be the thought that we are at the center of it all. Sometimes, we forget that it is God that has all of the power and God that does the work. Not us. God’s power indeed works through us, however He can choose to use anything and anyone.
