Know Your Name

The nations will see your vindication, and all kings your glory; you will be called by a new name that the mouth of the Lord will bestow. You will be a crown of splendor in the Lord’s hand, a royal diadem in the hand of your God. No longer will they call you Deserted, or name your land Desolate. But you will be called Hephzibah, and your land Beulah; for the Lord will take delight in you, and your land will be married. As a young man marries a young woman, so will your Builder marry you; as a bridegroom rejoices over his bride, so will your God rejoice over you. Isaiah 62:2‭-‬5 NIV

I think we all know what our name was before Jesus came in, before He called us, before He changed us. The world certainly knows what our name was. As does the enemy of our lives/souls. And let me tell you, sometimes it seems as though they will stop at nothing to remind us of who we were, what our name was.

But, please, allow me to remind you, as I remind myself, we have been given a new name by the King of kings and the Lord of lords. You, and I, have a new name. No more are we who we used to be. We don’t answer to those former names.

Sometimes, when we are reminded of the past, and who we once were, it’s almost easy, habitual, to answer to our former names. Names such as: fear, anger, bitterness, pride, depression, loneliness, abandoned, rejected, despair, envy, malice, rebellious, idolatry, stubborn, hate… And the list can honestly go on and on… But we have been changed! We have a new name. We are made new.

When God puts His heart in us and changes our name, we become like Him. We take on His character. We are called beloved. We are known for our patience, kindness, mercy, long-suffering, meekness, peace, joy, goodness, etc… (ref Galatians 5:22-23)
