Overcome

What does it mean to overcome and what are we overcoming?

The question above was posed at a church I visited not too long ago.. Immediately, a few passages of scripture came to mind: For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God? 1 John 5:4-5
These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world. John 16:33
And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. Romans 12:2

For starters, as Christians, we follow the example of Jesus and the Word of God. This is how we overcome the world, temptation, sin. Will we fail? At times, yes. But, we don’t have to remain in a fallen state. Revelation 12:11 gives us the hope that we can overcome our accuser by the blood of Jesus Christ the Lamb, by the word of our testimony, and by not loving our lives – even if it means death.

And this comes with promise: He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels. Revelation 3:5
To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne. Revelation 3:21

Can we overcome on our own? Absolutely not! However, we can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth us. Philippians 4:13

God is for us! Because of Jesus’s victory on the cross and because He overcame, we too are able to partake in His victory and overcome!
