But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. John 14:26-27 KJV
Have you ever mistaken something that is familiar for comfort? I have. What is familiar is not necessarily synonymous with comfort. We become familiar with someone or something from a long or close association with that person or thing. However, comfort brings us ease, peace, freedom from pain, suffering. Sometimes that person, place, or thing that we are familiar with is the very source of our pain, suffering.
Over the past year, I’ve done a lot of reflection. I have had to be honest with myself and let more than a few things go that I had grown familiar with and confused them with comfort although they brought me unease, discomfort, pain.
God’s Spirit is our source of comfort. There is no substitute. As I look back over my own life and I look at so many around me, I see that we often try to find comfort in what’s familiar. We try to find comfort in everything around us. Nothing, save for Jesus and His Holy Spirit, will ever satisfy that comfort and peace we seek. Some believe that there is comfort in the familiar. At times, sure, there is stability in that. But the peace and ease that true comfort, the kind that Jesus provides only comes from Him. Nothing in this world can satisfy that.

There really is only one like Jesus and that’s himself. You made a good difference between true comfort and familiarity.
