Measure of a Life

“Then someone called from the crowd “Teacher, please tell my brother to divide our father’s estate with me.” Jesus replied,“Friend, who made me a judge over you to decide such things as that?” Then he said, “Beware! Guard against every kind of greed. Life is not measured by how much you own.”” Luke‬ ‭12‬:‭13‬-‭15‬ ‭NLT‬‬

The older I get, the more I realize not only my mortality, but also that of my parents. Already I have friends passing away, their spouses, their parents. I thank the Lord that I have not had to experience the grief and pain of losing my own parents. It’s a pain to which I cannot personally relate.

I was chatting with a friend. Her man friend’s father was recently diagnosed with dementia. “It feels like they’re already parting his inheritance, although he is still alive and quite lucid most of the time,” she shared.

This conversation sat with me… What is the measure of a life? What is a life worth?

Or maybe my question is: Are we so consumed with covetousness and greed that we don’t value the lives of others?

We don’t live for the riches and possessions of this world.

How easily we forget.

I don’t want to forget. I don’t want to get so wrapped up in the who gets what debacle should the dreaded day arise of my parents’ passing. I don’t want my children to have that fight should I pass.

Sometimes we think our worth is wrapped up in our possessions; what we own, how we dress, what we drive, where we vacation… But what’s it all for? So what if you gain everything that this world has to offer us, then you lose you soul, your salvation? So what! And what will it all mean if we miss heaven?

In heaven there will be no sin, no darkness, no greed, no flesh, no earthly possessions. There will be only light. It will only be a place for praise and adoration to our God and King.

How do you measure the worth of a life?

  1. Thoughtful post. Both of my parents have passed away. My mom just passed in January. And it certainly has made me more aware of my own mortality and the importance of making every day count, by seeking God diligently and focusing on what matters most. Thank you for sharing this.
