“And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the LORD. And, behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the LORD; but the LORD was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the LORD was not in the earthquake: and after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.” 1 Kings 19:11-12 KJV
I was chatting with a friend recently and sharing a piece of my testimony, regarding how I came back to Christ.
To be quite honest with you, there were several events that brought me back from my backslidden state. And let me tell you, I’m thankful!
This particular event, I was in a nightclub, of all places. If you’ve ever been to one, you know that it is loud in there. I mean, can’t hear yourself think. Can’t hear the person next to, who’s screaming, to communicate, in your ear.
But, I remember hearing a still small voice, amidst the noise, the chaos, the distractions. And I knew it was the voice of the Lord. Right there. In the middle of the club. I didn’t say the words, but I remember thinking, God, it’s so loud in here. If you come back, I won’t hear You. I won’t hear the trumpet sound over the noise.
Let me tell you. That sobered me up quickly. I left immediately, without saying anything to anyone, in tears. Convicted. I have not been to another club ever since.
Thing is, sometimes we are in places in our lives, not even physically there, where the noise is so loud that we can’t hear the voice of the Lord. Sometimes we’re so distracted and so busy with life, work, family, children – you name it – that we can’t, or don’t, hear the voice of God.
“Then the Lord called Samuel. Samuel answered, “Here I am.” Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord: The word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him.” 1 Samuel 3:4, 7 NIV
Even backslidden, God called me. He called Samuel before Samuel knew Him.
We, the church MUST turn down the noise in our lives. God is calling us back to Him and He’s calling the lost as well. I think of the Ethiopian Eunuch who met Philip in Acts 8.. He had not yet experienced God. He needed someone to guide him, help disciple him. This is what God wants from us. We can’t do this unless we turn down the noise in our lives.
