Be Still, Be Silent

The older I become, the more I learn that I don’t have to “show up to every invitation.” Taking the example of Jesus, I’ve learned how to be still and silent.

Not every invitation to a conversation requires an immediate response, sometimes I am not supposed to engage in certain conversations at all.

In learning to be still and silent, sadly, I’ve dealt with personal attacks on my character, not just by those who may not really know me, but also by those whom I know and call family, friend… Allow me to tell you, friend, these attacks hurt in the most painful way.

But, I remember that Jesus was rejected and despised. His own received Him not. Still despite the fact that, ‭“He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.” Isaiah 53:7 KJV

He opened not His mouth…

Can you imagine? With all the verbal attacks we encounter today, not opening our mouths? It’s a challenge and completely possible and totally necessary.

You know, I feel like I finally get it. When Jesus taught us the beatitudes, ‭He taught us to “…love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you!” Matthew 5:44b NLT

When we pray for someone, you can’t help but love them. You can’t help but have mercy and compassion for those whom you pray for. Speaking from personal experience.

Just because the invitation is there, to argue, gossip, fight, debate, etc… doesn’t mean you must accept it. Sometimes you have only to be still and be silent.

  1. Wonderful wisdom! Also timely as encouragement from the Lord, as just yesterday I decided not to respond to a stranger (friend of a friend on Facebook) trying to sell me something via Messenger. My personality/nature makes it not feel comfortable to ignore anyone trying to talk to me, but I’ve had to learn to be selective with the resource of my time. I appreciate this post!
