Stop Running

I remember some years, I was at the gym. I was on the second floor, cycling. The exercise bicycles happened to overlook the area where the treadmills and ellipticals were on the first floor. I became engrossed at how dedicated my fellow gym mates, on those machines, ran their hearts out, or stepped away, only to go nowhere in particular. It reminded me of my childhood guinea pig, Monica, she would get in her squeaky wheel, in the middle of the night, it had to be the middle of the night 🙂 and she would run and run, then drink water before going back to sleep.

And, don’t get me wrong, I know people run marathons at the gym! They run miles and miles. I preferred the outside/trails for running.

In any case, after that day, that imagery, the feeling of running, running, running and not going anywhere… I began to feel something resonate inside of me.

Sometimes, we can run, run, run and not go anywhere at all.

Have you ever felt like that?

This is where God tells us to Be still.

I think in this society that we live in today, people are constantly on the go, constantly on the move. Why? Sometimes I want to ask: What are you running from? I feel like if we slowed down long enough, most of us are running from ourselves and hurts that God doesn’t want us to carry, rather He wants us to be healed and delivered from. We’re running from cares that we need to cast on Jesus because He cares for us.

And maybe it’s not that we need to slow down.. Rather, we need to be still. Maybe instead of turning down the noise, we need to turn it off and get back into the Word of God, get back into our prayer closets, and rediscover the heart of worship.

In our stillness, we can learn, once again, what it means for there to be less of us, less of the cares of this world, less of the cares of this life, and more of Jesus.
