Sacrifice & Obedience

Sacrifice is better than obedience.

She said it once, I let it slide, but it lingered somewhere in my mind…

Sacrifice is better than obedience.

The second time I couldn’t just let it go… Not in good conscience… “Sacrifice is an element of obedience.”

Sacrifice is better than obedience,” she insisted – rather, demanded, staring me in the eye.

Is this a challenge?

We didn’t see eye-to-eye. The zealot in me could have taken on the control-freak in her that day. However, the wisdom in me won, and silence prevailed. What was there to gain from proving my point? She truly believed her stance, as firmly as I believed mine.

As much as I have tried to see both sides. I cannot see where a sacrifice that has been made in God’s will has not been an element of obedience of God’s will. If there is a sacrifice to be made outside of, or in direct opposition to obedience to God’s will, can we truly call this “sacrifice“? Is it not disobedience, rebellion?

When I consider Jesus dying on the cross: obedience and sacrifice. He came to this earth to be the ultimate sacrifice for the sins of all men. Luke 22:42 KJV “Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.” Even Jesus, had a moment where He asked for another way, however in His obedience lay His sacrifice. Giving His life was an act of obedience and sacrifice. I cannot personally say which is greater. They go hand-in-hand. You simply cannot have one without the other.

Each of the disciples, when they were called to follow Jesus, gave up everything that they were doing – family, career, lifestyle, and followed Him. These, again, acts of obedience and sacrifice. When He said, “Follow me.” They had a choice. Just as the rich young ruler, who decided to turn away sorrowful, rather than follow after Jesus and leave behind his worldly possessions, they obeyed and sacrificed those earthly things.

We all have our own manner of obedience and sacrifices in our lives. In order to obey the call on our lives, or the will of God in our lives, there are relationships, places, things, we must sacrifice. Sometimes it won’t make sense to those around us, and guess what! It doesn’t have to!

We look for human explanations to make sense of supernatural interventions. “Walk by faith, not by sight.” Listen for His voice to lead and direct your path. Obedience is not without sacrifice. But I promise you, it will all work out in the end!
